Is It Okay to Only Floss Occasionally?

Posted on 10/5/2020 by Dr. Joni
Is It Okay to Only Floss Occasionally? You likely know the common rule of thumb about brushing your teeth: twice a day, once when you get up and again before you go to bed. But what about flossing? Many people know that they should floss “regularly,” but what does that mean? If you ask us, it means daily. If you don't floss that often, you might wonder if it's okay if you only floss occasionally. While any flossing is better than none at all, you really do need to floss once a day for a few reasons.

Flossing Isn't the Same as Brushing

Brushing your teeth removes the plaque, bacteria, and debris on the front and the tops/bottoms of your teeth, but even toothbrushes with very long bristles can't get in between teeth. While it may look like there are no spaces between some of your teeth, there are. These spaces are so tight that you simply can't get a toothbrush all the way between them. That's why it's important that you floss. A string of floss can slip between your teeth and remove the bacteria hiding there. If you don't floss, bacteria will begin eating away at your teeth from the side. It's harder to see the resulting cavities until they're larger and more serious. If you don't know these cavities exist, you can't come see us to have them taken care of.

Flossing Isn't that Difficult

People who don't like to floss may not fully understand how easy and quick it is to do. You don't need to add more than a few minutes to your nightly routine. Simply take your dental floss and run it back and forth between each pair of teeth a few times, moving it up and down so that every part of the tooth is cleaned. Flossing usually takes less than five minutes, especially once you get used to it. Have any other questions about flossing? Ask us at your next appointment or give us a call.
